2008-04-20 - VSA Culture Show - PART 01 - PREPARATION : The Vietnamese Student Association at the University of California, Berkeley strives to reflect the diverse, vibrant,and dynamic Vietnamese population on campus. Since the establishment of Berkeley’s VSA in 1978, the annual VSA Culture Show has brought together students to produce a theatrical production of music, art, dance, drama and prose. The annual VSA Culture Show is best known for this integration of creative disciplines.

This year’s production, Cánh Hong Trong Gió, translated as Petals in the Wind, explores the story of four Vietnamese women during the period of the Vietnam War. Through elaborate set design, costume and dance, the audience will be transported back to the 1970s and experience the interweaving of these four women’s lives during this time of national conflict. This historical showcase elicits a nostalgia that radiates through the Vietnamese audience who experienced it, while educating and inspiring others, especially the youth who are unaware of this part of history and the crucial role women played during this time period.

Ultimately, the show provides a unique performance space for creative expression by Vietnamese Americans.
Through the involvement of over 100 talented students, Petals in the Wind will showcase eight types of dances, a unique historical fashion show and vocal performances, all within an elaborate storyline. Those who participate find themselves immersed in a process of cultural exchange as they are enlightened first-hand about Vietnamese history, community and culture that are displayed in the production.

This year, we present an emotionally captivating show about the women behind the Vietnam War. Our Spring 2008 production explores the story of four Vietnamese women during this period of national conflict. Like rose petals resisting the force of gravity and drifting in the wind, these Vietnamese women refuse to surrender their strengths and true essence in the midst of tumultuous adversities caused by the war. In a time of national crisis, each woman must endure her own personal hardships and find the inner will to survive. Just as a floating rose petal sustains its beauty and fragrance despite the shifting moods of the wind, these women use their personal strengths and the bond they find in each other to surmount desperate times and persevere while holding within them the heart of a nation.

In 2008, we take this opportunity to honor our grandmas, mothers, sisters and daughters for their love and sacrifice.

The title expresses a romantic theme during a conflicted period in Vietnamese history. Through elaborate set design, costume, dance, the audience will be transported to the 1940s, during the era of French colonization in Vietnam. This historical showcase elicits a nostalgia that radiates through the Vietnamese audience who experienced it, while educating and inspiring others, especially the youth who are unaware of this part of history. The politics and love tell the tale of ageless themes that have continued to shape society to the present.

**SIDE NOTE: I just want to apologize for the photos not being up to par. The stage lighting was fairly dim, plus when the spotlight was shining down it would cast a lot of shadows on peoples' faces; thus, making it hard to capture the correct moments and photos. Once again, sorry about that everyone; however, feel free to use and post these photos however you like - as long as they're not being sold for a profit I'm fine with it. =) Enjoy!
